EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS & SUPPLY BIN
WHAT IS THIS BIN FOR?
An emergency, such as an earthquake, is something that we all need to be prepared for: at home, at work and at school. School District 42 has a budget for disaster funding and is directing their funds towards seismic upgrades for our schools. This means that in the event that a disaster occurs during the school day, the funding for emergency supplies must be provided by us, the parents. In 2017, the School District supplied each local elementary school with a bin like the one on our school grounds adjacent to 119 Ave. But it arrived completely empty and it has been up to us to make sure that it is well-stocked to support our children in case of an emergency. Read below for the timeline of our emergency bin.

CURRENT SITUATION
- In the event of an emergency (such as an earthquake), the assumption is that 20% of the kids that attend our school will be left here for up to 48 hours. That is approx. 120 children!
- ONGOING: We will decide which items on the supply list that we do not already have are the most urgently needed during an emergency and work towards procuring them.
- June 2018: Our emergency bin is now stocked with 5 pop up tents (10' x 10'), 15 tarps of various sizes and ropes of various sizes. Our shelter needs in case of an emergency are well on the way to being taken care of.
- February 2018: The emergency bin is now completely stocked with the water needs of the school for 48 hours following an emergency. We have purchased and stocked the 750 litres of water we still needed and now have fifty 15L boxes in addition to the water supplies we already stored.
- December 2017: Thanks again to the donations from June 2017, we now have enough water on hand for the first 24 hours following an emergency. We have a combination of individual bottles of water and three 55 gallon emergency water barrels. These barrels can be filled with clean tap water each year to ensure a reliable supply of reusable drinking water. In the event of an emergency, the water is filtered through a filter attachment before being consumed. These are now filled and ready to go.
- August 2017: Thanks to your generous donations at the end of the 2016/2017 school year, we now have emergency emergency blankets for 100% of the students at the school.
- May 2017: We spent PAC funds to stock the bin with enough meal replacement bars to feed the children that would be left here: these have a shelf life of 5 years. We also have backpacks for each division with a radio, first aid kit, toilet paper, gloves, cups and garbage bags.
- 2017: Bin arrived empty to the school grounds
WHERE WE ARE NOW
Our PAC does not have the budget to acquire all the necessary emergency items at once, so this is an ongoing process. Please know that we have taken care of the most urgent and basic needs first and now are focused on procuring the remaining suggested supplies.
